My iPad3 is now gathering dust. Until a month ago, I used it as a media consumption device only. It was slow, and Safari was so overloaded it seemed like every page would blow up and have to be reloaded. I had flown the thing across the room on multiple occasions because it was so slooooooooow and undependable. (Even with that abuse, the hardware was never damaged. That says something about the durability of the device.)

Then, I got a 10.5 inch IPP with 64GB. It's hard to describe how different this device is from my old iPad, even though it's still an iPad. Yes, it was expensive, but there was a sale at Best Buy which helped out. It is really a different experience. I'm very happy with it. I can imagine that the 9.7 inch IPP would be a terrific experience, too. And I was very impressed with the regular 9.7 inch iPad as well. But the display on the 10.5 was too compelling to pass up. And it is an incredibly fast device. Still, you can't go wrong with the other models, either.

Gads, I sound like a real fanboy, even though I'm not. I'm just a nerd who's impressed with the engineering and technology in this iPad.

I didnt expect a huge difference between the Air 2 and the Pro but WOW! The Pro just hauls ass at everything. Looks a lot better too, more vibrant and sharp or something...love the Pro.

The OP might as well say...."My old Power Mac G3 is really slow to load webpages"

JUST UPGRADE! You can get the new iPad for 329 and it blows the ancient iPad 3 out of the water. Amazes me how cheap people are sometimes.

I disagree. My 2009 Mac Mini is performing just as well as when purchased back then. I see no point in upgrading just because Apple thinks you should to make more profit. It amazes me how easily people like you follow Apple’s manipulations and are such fan boys.

I find that incredibly hard to believe. I have a 2008 MBP that runs like a horse crap for a few years now. Takes forever to start up or load even the Photos app and I’m guess it has better specs than your mini. So unless you never upgrade your OS you’re either lying or in denial.

2008 MBP probably has the same Penryn (mobile Wolfdale) processors as the 2009 Mac Mini.

I dunno how much resources Sierra requires but paired with an SSD and 8GB RAM, I find Wolfdale and Yorkfield work just fine with Windows 10.

Mind, Apple chipsets didn't reach Wolfdale level until the A9.

You must hate her. The iPad 2, while still usable... just barely. Typing urls ( touch screen slow response ) for web surfing will be annoying at best.

Puffin browser is a proxy. Please be careful of using credit cards and visiting bank accounts.

I use the paid version of puffin on my ipad2 and it is not a proxy.

My first iPad was the iPad 3 (New iPad as they called it). I had it for about a year and had to upgrade it due to the performance issues. I think it was underpowered from day one. The internals were the same as the iPad 2 with the only change being that they put a slightly stronger GPU to handle the Retina display. I think that’s party why they replaced it so fast with the iPad 4, that and to get rid of the 30 pin dock connector. I think your iPad is slow just because its five years old which in technology years is ancient. I think its time to upgrade.

Yes yes, I've heard the same line from my 90+ year old grandparents when just 2 years ago they got a flat screen after the 30 year old tube finally died. If thats your line of thinking, fine. What you call a "sheep" is just the normalcy of the tech world today. But don't expect the rest of us to be shocked that an iPad 3 is now slow.

Also, Apple is no longer supporting the iPad 3 with updates so from a security perspective you are putting yourself at risk. And before you say "planned obsolescence" or "they just want you to buy more stuff"....I'll just point out you are free to move to another platform like Android where your device will be even slower and obsolete at a quicker rate. Or you can just stop using these devices altogether if its such a hassle to upgrade a couple times every decade...

Normalcy my a**. It’s the planned obsolescence by many companies to get you off of older (meaning just a few years) devices to buy their newest and more expensive ones. It’s easy to be sucked into their marketing that you have an “old” device and you had better get with it and move along. It also doesn’t help that their later software updates force the issue by essentially making the device so underperforming you get fed up and buy into the hype.

I just saw a study recently linking conspiracy theorists and mental unbalances.

Since you clearly don’t understand the pace of technology, have fun on another platform then. Like I said.....either except it or don’t use any of these new fangled gadgets.

I don't think Apple intentionally plans to obsolete devices. They clearly enhance their products from both a hardware and software perspective to be more capable and powerful with each new release. That is goodness, and is why so many people (me included) stick with Apple products. A side effect of this, though, is that their newer offerings often grow beyond the capabilities of older products. It just doesn't make business sense to have the company support too many older devices with new software by backwards implementing new functions on ancient hardware which can't exploit new hardware features.

I have an iPad3, too. It has gotten progressively worse in terms of performance and reliability. Some of that is certainly due to new function added to the OS, but not all of it. It was an under-powered device from the start, and now it's gotten to the point of just not being able to keep up. The hardware still works as well as the day I bought it, but I understand and agree with the Apple direction of cutting off support at some point. I don't think that Apple intentionally added functions to IOS to make it run so poorly on iPad3s that people were forced to move off them. And I don't think support ending at 9.6.5 was done to intentionally force users off the device, either. It was just something that had to eventually happen. All things die, even technology products. Or, should I say, especially technology products.

I recently bought a 10.5 inch IPP. It's like a completely different device than my iPad3. I have lots of Apple products, and I have to say, the IPP is a better consumption device than my 2017 MBP. Sure, there was a lot of marketing hype surrounding this product. But, to be honest, the publicity wasn't hype, it was truth. That may not be the case with other Apple products. YMMV. I still have my iPhone6+ and can't see a reason to move to an 8 or X. The phone works fine. But not my iPad3.

Dude it came out early 2012. The device is now is 5 1/2 years old. It's technically simply outdated.
That is BS. There is nothing that has happened from a technology standpoint that should affect basic app functionality other than OS changes. My iPad locks up almost ever time I use it and it takes minuted to open a simple app. Plenty of memory, Plenty of RAM. WTF Apple, I have an iPad Pro too and you don't slow it down. Be a responsible world citizen and don't force obsolesce!. I literally have hundreds of old computer components and AV equipment I can't use anymore. What a waste of resources. IT IS SO RIDICULOUS!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Sarcasm or serious? If your post is actually serious .... that’s the way technology works in case you’ve been under a rock. How dare they come out with cars instead of faster horses. It’s called progress. If ya don’t like it don’t buy anything. You’ll constantly be disappointed.

Uh man **** the ipad 3. It’s apples worst product and ios 7 butchered it within a year and got slower and slower after every ios update. I don’t know why I kept mine for so long but I upgraded to the ipad pro 10.5 when that came out which is nice.

From a performance standpoint, the 2017 iPad 9.7 (Apple A9, $329) is, I estimate, around 10-16x faster than the iPad 3 (Apple A5X).

The reason 2008 or 2009 Core 2-based computers are usable even now is because they were so far ahead in terms of performance compared to the likes of the Apple A5 chipsets. Iirc, Apple A5 is like Pentium II or III level. Mind, we do have P2 and P3 systems running Windows 95/98 in our labs and those perform way worse than the iPad 3.

I found funny when same people calls everyone who not update their OS when new iOS release. Then when old decide gets slow, the same people will call people upgrade their hardware.

I am for one will not update my iOS devices to new iOS version. This will keeps my devices runs good until it dies.

I still remember I am able to throw Windows 2000 on the Intel Pentium 2 computers. It wasn't too uncommon Intel Pentium 3 based computers running Windows XP.

If you count, these machines runs longer than iPad 3.

I have a 2003 GM car... This care despite it has over 300,000KM, it still runs. I have a PC that is around 2008, it still runs.

Yes, iPad 3 is outdate at current stage, but If this thing still run, but no reason this thing cannot even do most basic functions.

That's partly because Apple chipsets went from Pentium 2/3 level to Core 2 Duo in the span of 5 years compared to ~10 years for x86.

We had 2 iPad 3s that we traded in last year for 2017 iPad 9.7s and even. We never updated those past iOS 6 and even on iOS 6 they were still super slow.
