Mirroring with my AVP with my baseline M1 iMac is a bad experience. Everything slows downs, there's lag, FPS drops, Chrome is almost unusable, and it's overall a very bad experience. I have none of these issues with my M3 MacBook Air 16GB, where performance is stellar.

A couple folks have said that upgrading to Sonoma 14.6.1 and switching my WiFi channel to 149 would improver performance. Is this true? Would hate to have to spend the money for an M3 iMac now.

Your WiFi may not be that good, so what you can do is connect your iMac using Ethernet. Keep WiFi enabled, even if not connected to any Access Point, but make sure to set the order to place the Ethernet adapter on the top. These steps should help solve your issue.
Also, make sure Bluetooth is ON on both devices.

If the problem continues, you should consider upgrading network equipment.

Same für me. Lowering the resolution helps. 1080p Seems the sweetspot for constant 60 hz
