For a while, my g3 (900mhz/128RAM) was super slow to start up, and then every once and a while it just went to blue screen instead of desktop.

Eventually I took it to Apple (applecare expired) and they somehow got it to start up properly... for a while. They didn't charge, which was nice. But they didn't tell me what was wrong.

The last time I started it up, it was really slow (gray screen with circular thing takes several minutes), so I've been just putting it to "sleep".... afraid to shut it down.

Perhaps this is related to the heat I get from the left side (not battery side) of my ibook whenever it's not sleeping. Not after an hour of work, but after two minutes. Maybe the burning smell I've detected once or twice (not kidding) was my logic board being fried.

Can I fix this by upgrading RAM, like I should have done when I first bought it? It heats up right away, even if I just have one or two small programs running.

Or is something internal fried?

anyway...

thanks in advance
B

You probably don't want to hear this...but maybe it's time to look into an iBook G4. The G3's (not the early 500Mhz) had all the logic board frying problems. Literally TONS of G3 iBooks have had this problem, and I would try to get away from it while you can. Of course, money may be a problem, buying a G4 iBook, but it's just a suggestion!

Thanks for the advice.

Any idea on the price range of fixing something like that?

Another note, though... it seems a lot of the G4s have had problems with logic boards getting fried, too. Just from what I've read Googling around.

its a risky choice, you can either up the ram and spend about a 100 bucks, and hope that the heat doesn't return or just get a new iBook. You can easily be losing money if you spend money on ram that doesn't help the situation. 128 mb's of ram isn't at all enough for mac osx, you have to have over 512 for good performance. Apparently your iBook is frying so I'd get a new g4 iBook, with applecare, and if you want to, get even more then 512 mb's of ram OUTSIDE of apple.

it seams in general that all of macintosh laptops have had some kind of heat problem they just didnt have a good way to sirclate air in them and from what i read in som magazines u can literaly burn your self on one specialy the clam shell powerbook or ibook or what ever them ones was called.yea but most of the macintosh line of laptops had a heat problem that could be solved buying a colling pad for them witch keped the bottom cool and keped the heat down really what it sounds like to me is that your hdd or cpu could be going the way of the dodo bird cause of heat stroke. or it can be memory going bad.the burning smell prolly was your case geting really hot
