VERY sluggish

Of late, I have been running into a massive slowdown on my two El Capitan Macs- one using the latest beta (mid-2012 MBP with 2.5 Ghz i7 and 8 gigs RAM, platter hard drive, along with a 2011 MBA i5, 4 gigs RAM and SSD.) I've noticed OS X now is stuffing all it can into memory and then working it out as needed. I can't find anything that accounts for this horrendous slowdown. I am comparing it to where they both were performance-wise within the last couple of months. I can switch browsers from Chrome to Safari and it doesn't matter.

Any suggestions at all as to what to look at? I've tried but not succeeded in using my own ideas on this.

Open Activity Monitor and see if anything is consuming a lot of CPU time.

Check the memory tab in Activity Monitor and see what the memory pressure says.

the fact that you're seeing this on 2 different macs, makes me wonder about the common denominator(s). slowdowns with what? certain apps? the web? (you mention safari and chrome...issues with your online connection?). not everyone's experiencing this, so...look for what's similar between the machines...

It shouldn't be memory. The memory management didn't magically change on your two computers over the past few months. It has to be something in common between and specific to your machines. Either something is hogging CPU time, or you've filled your hard drive/SSD. Of those things, the software issue is more likely. It would be helpful if you posted a picture of your CPU activity from Activity Monitor sorted from most to least.

I find it worse on Chrome, but it happens in other browsers and apps as well. Really has me scratching my head because it happened rather suddenly and at the same time.

I'm scratching my head too, because you haven't posted a picture of your Activity Monitor. Honestly, we can't help if you don't help us. We'll all just be throwing darts in the dark. Maybe it's related to Adobe Flash (see what I mean about wild guesses?)
