Very, very weird problem when calling - A bot is taking over my call!!

This has happened to me 4 times now. Three times in a row this morning, and once last week.

When I dial a number I hear the person in the other end pick up the phone. Sometimes the person gets to say "Hi" and the the conversation might last 5 seconds. Then the other person will be cut off and I hear a bot in the other end. Sometimes they speak Danish other times they speak English. They talk about mindless crap like "I'm coming over with a cake later" and such garbage, but it sounds like they are in the middle with a conversation with someone. Nothing happens when I speak and they don't respond. I'm sure it's a bot. This happened when I called my own company, my doctor and a person I have done business with.

I have a jailbroken 3GS. I have apps such as Rock, Cydia, Winterboard, Intelligscreen, QuickreplySMS, Stacks and a lot of other stuff. What the hell is this and how do I get rid of it? I called my supplier and they have never heard about this problem before.

can I record when I'm in the middle of a conversation? I know I could on my Ericsson c905..

As for getting rid of the jailbreak, that would mean restoring wouldn't it? Cause I hate restoring and having to set everything up all nicely again, so I'm hoping I can avoid that. I used blackrain to jailbreak if that matters.
 
it hasnt happened since, but pretty often my phone will hang up when I call, or sometimes people in the other end can hear me but I cant hear them (I know this problem can happen with any phone though). Could it be a virus because it's jailbroken? I didn't install anything weird. my brother's got almost the same stuff as I do
 
Where do you live? Do you receive any unwanted radio signals? i don't know.

I heard some time ago that there was an app to call 2 friends and make it look like their calling each other while it's just you doing a conversation group.

Weird problem, do you smoke marijuana? LOL, just kidding :D

this person does not know what he is talking about.. whats the "strange software" 3.1.2? The only security issue is with SSH thats it.. its funny when people think they know what there talkin about when they really dont
 
Do you actually live in Denmark? I live in Denmark and I have Debitel as my carrier and that SAME thing happened to me a few days ago!

I was standing at the grocery store trying to call someone and when they picked up the phone I could hear them for at few sec and then it would switch over to some woman talking, she was saying "yeah yeah oookk" as if she was speaking to someone else and I was listening in. This happened once, i tried calling 3 more times the call would connect but I couldn't hear the other person on the end.

Dunno what it is but there's definitely something rotten about iphones in denmark

Yeah I live in Denmark too NSK. This is very weird. Are yours jailbroken too? I have Telia and they said they'd never heard about this before. I find that kinda weird since you've also experienced this problem. I mean there's gotta be a few more people than us then
 
this was kind of weird, i had a similar problem yesterday when i called my house, while i was in my house to test something. i called, and it didnt ring, all i heard was like noise, kinda like voices. and the weird thing is, is that my phone isnt even jailbroken! it has been jailbroken for 3 days, about a month ago, and i dont think something would stay after a restore, and even if it could, i dont think 3 days is enough time to download something malicious. but it was really creapy. the iphone interferes with speakers, including on my macbook, if you have ur iphone with u and ever hear a buzzing on ur speakers, thats ur iphone interfering with it, so it does interfere with similar frequencies, so maybe it interfered with a baby monitor thing or someones phone call, radio, or tv. anyway it was really weird.

The buzzing is a result of the modulation scheme that GSM/EDGE uses. That's why you don't hear WiFi or TV signals in your speakers as an example.

Hearing other people's calls is definitely a carrier (Telia) problem and is no doubt happening to other phones besides iPhones. There could be a misconfiguration in the cell site or two cell sites utilizing the same frequencies are way to close to one another.

The cell site may be over-utilized and trying to handle too many simultaneous calls. If it tells your phone to go to another occupied frequency or reuses the frequency you are supposed to be on, you will hear the call, but they won't hear you.

The receive side of a GSM conversation can be listened to by ANY phone - it has no security other than the phone OS not allowing you to normally operate it like a scanner. There used to be hacks for older Nokia's I believe to put them in a mode where you could just have it act as a scanner. Using this hack would be illegal in almost all countries.

The upstream (or transmit) side of the GSM conversation is ignored by the cell site if your information does not match the calls stored info (IMEI, call id, etc). This prevents you from taking over anyone's call and talking with the other person.

The carrier is probably aware of the situation, but I doubt their customer support would be aware of it.

You could try asking to speak with a manager and tell them you would like your complaint to be forwarded to a cell site technician. The technician would be interested in knowing about your problem if they weren't already aware of it. They would also need to know the specific location you were at when this happened so they know what cell site your phone was probably on.


When I say frequency above, I technically mean time-slot on a frequency because each frequency can have tens of calls on it at the same time.
