I just read something in itunes while trying to activate my iphone. Im a new customer and I had no idea they made a credit check (im 18). Anyways, at the end of it, they gave me three options, to put the credit check approval code by going to a store (didnt want to go to one), get prepaid(sucks), or restart. I restarted about 10 times, and in frustration, I called as well. Now, when I was trying to activate it without the code (didnt know I needed one) were they performing a credit check--was that what was taking 3 mins?
If so, I did it on my SN which is horrible, and on my moms too. Please tell me that the itunes did not run a credit check those times I tried activating it. What should I do? I plan to go tomorrow to att.

Running multiple credit checks does indeed affect your credit score. And using someone else's SSN is in all likelihood illegal. It's kind of known as fraud.

If you are a new customer, then yes, ATT was probably running a credit check every time you ran through the process. If you are an existing customer moving from one phone to the iPhone then no, they don't run the credit check.

They will just ask for a deposit. If you have no credit or little credit they need some money to ensure you won't skip out on a bill.

Generally they should do a 'soft' hit of your credit which shouldn't affect score or anything else.

Well, im speaking to an apple rep to see what he/she says about this.
It probably did a lot of damage to my credit, i ran it a lot times trying to get it to work. I SERIOUSLY hope they didnt do a credit check.

They undoubtedly ran a credit check. But I suspect checking it multiple times from the same company (AT&T) will not really ding your credit score too much.

Besides, I monitor my credit scores quite closely, and every time I've checked my credit score for some reason (new phone acct etc.) , it only dings the fico for 1 point.

Also, checks on your score fall off (i.e. no longer affect your score) after a year.

I dont know, Im really worried now. I have always been preoccupied with keeping a good credit score, something 750 or above. ATT ran my credit at least ten times, which if really meant 5 points and not one, would be 25 points--pretty bad.
