I have seen many a design being critiqued on this forum so I thought I would give it a go myself.

This is a business card design for a vfx company (my own) but I am having trouble with the placement of the sun logo, tbh I ran out of creative ideas after the 20th rendition, probably cause I'm too close to the whole aspect of the design for my new forming company...

The sun logo is a must as it is the core graphic of my company so any ideas that you guys might have let me know :D

thanx

Well, here goes:

Not really into the type. I understand what you were going for, but it's a little to cartoonish for my personal taste. Additionally, it's hard to tell what's near the end — is that an O or a U? I'm guessing it's an O for Sandstorm, but couldn't somebody mistake it for a European company? (Sandsturm... would that be Norwegian??) Alternately, you could see two words, separated by an arrow, like this: Sani>Storm. I usually say take a somewhat straight-looking font and "dirty it up" yourself through Photoshop, Illustrator, whatever.

Also, for a VFX company, it's very plain and straightforward. I say try to make something more dynamic, like making the sun huge and bleeding off the edges, with the name of the company perhaps vertically centered and filling most of the width of the card. Something like that.

Hope this helps, and sorry it's so negative. I think you've got a good, interesting concept, but my main advice is that it needs to be more dynamic and/or playful for your industry.

Get rid of the drop shadow, and change the font like that other guy said. Other than that I like it. Maybe duplicating the sun/text, enlarging it a little and setting it to "Overlay" would look cool or something.

Thanx for the replies so far.

Hey Guys,

Many thanks for the replies so far, I will be posting some updates soon for you to check out - look forward to your critiques...

I like the sun. Maybe try a version with the sun really big on the card?

The typeface - while it matches the sun quite well - takes about a second too long to become legible.

Also - the background...is that an image you're printing on? If so, I'd suggest losing the image and finding some actual light brown textured card stock to print on. The downside of that is in order to make it cost effective, you'll need to print at least 1,000 of them.

I know you're about to post some more concepts, so I'll save the detailed critique until then. But you're off to a pretty good start.

I like it. I think the D and the O need to finish closing a little more, but to me the font fits perfectly with the name. It reminds me of a once complete font that has been worn down by a sandstorm. I like it.

Positioning the sun is up to you, it's a lot easier for you to figure that out as you can scale it and move it as you please, where we have to imagine in our minds. I've learned that I can not always trust my imaginary layouts, once I get them done I sometimes really missed the mark.

So, I think your close. Looking good!

I agree. Printing a "textured" background on seems a little tacky.

I really like the sun though :D.
