I tried searching the forum before posting and I didn't really see the answer to my question. Sorry in advance if I missed it.

If you get the VGA adapter for the iPad and hook the iPad to a computer monitor will it show everything like the home screen with your icons or is it just for once you are in the pictures app, or videos?

Also, will you be able to use Keynote and Pages on an external monitor?

Thanks.

I *think* it's just going to do movies & pictures & Keynote.

iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter
Watch slideshows and movies on the big screen by connecting your iPad to a TV, monitor, projector, or LCD display that uses a VGA...

(i happen to be sitting there waiting to order it)

What i'm trying to figure out is if i NEED it with a Pico projector that has the iPod dock connector already......

I don't want to go ahead and order it and spend $30 i didn't need too, but then I don't want to get stuck needing it and have to wait either. UGH.

I sure hope video and pictures are allowed through it (my HDTV accepts VGA) but as far as the official word only Keynote is supported.

The description i posted was right from the product description. Keynote support is only listed on the Keynote app page.

I'm hoping for more than just keynote & video/pictures (my flashcard app would be great for Trivia), but only time will tell......

The iPhone and iPod only drives the video for specific tasks.

But the iPad seems different because it's not just video playback, so how knows. I kind of doubt it though. Only Steve can do that and we're not allowed Steve powers.

I'm really looking forward to this accessory either way.

You are getting pretty deep into the weeds for a product has has not yet been released to the public. In the interest of full disclosure, I have pre-ordered the VGA adapter. Nobody knows the capabilities of the iPad's video-out until they get their iPad. However, it is important to understand that the tablet is single-tasking. It makes sense then for the video-out to mirror the main display. One would expect mirroring to be its primary if not its only mode.

Now ask yourself a question: "What earthly purpose would Keynote serve if you could not send its presentations to an external monitor?" Think.

It does. The keynote page lists it. During the demos it appeared to even support telestrator "Madden" mode.

Even if you couldn't send Keynote presentations to an external monitor you could still use the iPad to create and edit presentations on the go then either email it to your Mac or transfer it when you get home. Don't be such a smartass before thinking yourself.

What idiot would pay for Keynote as a presentation editor if he could not also use it to make the presentation? You don't have to respond. I know the answer already.

Get over yourself, he answered your question with a legitimate response

I remember reading somewhere that iPad developers can access the video output capabilities in the SDK. So the specific app would have to put it into a video-out mode. I think this would be neat for certain games and the like.

There's more to read in the iPad development guide for registered iPhone devs. I would share more details, but I think that it's under NDA.

You act if spending $9.99 on the Keynote app is a major investment. If I was that worried about doing presentations with Keynote I would buy a Macbook/Macbook Pro and buy iWorks.

No, I it would not be a big investment. However, if it cannot display a presentation then it would most certainly be a dumb investment.
