Just bought a mini DVI to VGA adaptor to connect an old VGA monitor to my IMAC but my vga monitor is just showing diagonal lines across it do i have a crap monitor or does it have to be calibrated somehow other than in system perferences??

Try using different resolutions/colour depths/refresh rates (all found in display preferences). Sounds like the screen might be shafted though :eek:

the issue sounds like the vga monitor is dumb and might not be vesa compliant, and probably older than 7 years.

what you are seeing is the your mac trying to guess the resolution and refresh rate for the monitor and it is not supported by the monitor. obviosuly if you try and adjust the monitor, the settings are being "shown" on the monitor you cannot read so no luck there.
