Ok, lots of posts online about how limited the VGA adapter is. I didn't find out until I was getting ready to show some photo work to a room full of people that it was severely limited. (Thanks to a Google search while I was sweating it out as to why it didn't work.)

So, my question is...will there be a 3rd party accessory that will not have the limitation? IOW, is the limitation built into the iPad so that even a 3rd party hardware solution would still have the limitation? Or, can another product be a better solution?

Actually, I am not so disappointed in the fact that it is limited to photos as much as it limits 1) to ONLY slideshow. WTH!?!?! That was so frustrating. I want to be able to fly through the photos...pause on the ones I wanted, zoom in on the ones I wanted, etc. Slideshow as a way of dynamically showing the photos was a deal killer! 2) Videos that I had actually paid for that I wanted to watch on a big screen. NO GO!!! WTH!?!?!

So, point of this post is...should I return the VGA adapter I got? As it is, I will keep it for the VERY occasional usage that it will get as it's limited capacity will offer. On internet review of the adapter suggested that a software developed could write an app that would allow better use of the VGA adapter? Is that possible? Or will that be anti apple and will not be allowed?

What about using keynote on it instead of photos to do what you are wanting to do?

I have never used Keynote. I use PPT every day in the classroom. I also use Picasa and Picasa Web...and I have only uploaded photos to my iPad and iTouch via email...no albums in iTunes, etc.

Anytime I have used PPT to include a bunch of photos, I had to make the presentation and it takes a lot of time. Usually, I just throw a bunch of photos in a folder for a given topic. Is there an easier way with Keynote? I know did find a plug in for the older versions of PPT to import a bunch of photos...and I think there is now a way to do via newer versions.

The jailbreak that has been shown online shows that the VGA output thru the apple connector is a constant output, so that may be the easiest way to go.

Since it seems to be a software limitation, and not a hardware limitation, Apple will more then likely always restrict it's function in some way so as to avoid a bad user experience.

Jalilbreaking is not that hard to do, you may want to look into it.

Jailbrake-newbie question...

If I jailbreak the iPad to have constant video thru the adapter, will I need to re-jailbreak each time the iPad software is updated ?

Depends on what trick Apple plays to disable the jailbreak. What you have to do is simply wait. Once a firmware update is released, the jailbreak people work on a way to allow the update without affecting the jailbreak.

In the past some updates have been a simple task where the jb continued to work. Others were more complicated.

Sure it's fun to update as soon as it's available, but can you live without it for a week or two? You had already been using the current version for a while, so why not wait until it has been sorted out?

What you have to ask yourself is if the updates are worth it or not. For instance I have a JB iphone 3g which will not get the multi-tasking with the 4.0 update, so I will be staying at the current version.

Having video output is important to my need, so I will start looking into how to JB for that feature. Thanks...

So many people want this, and think it's a logical option, so why has Apple restricted it? My only guess is that it's to avoid draining the battery too fast. Either that or maybe the video output can only handle so much before it will crash the O/S. Both scenarios would make the device look less then perfect in most peoples eyes, and Apple is extremely good at limiting functionality or options in exchange for the perception of a good experience.

My biggest issue with the VGA is that I need a wireless VGA plug. That would make the iPad Keynotes very useful.
