Viagra Spam

Not sure if this is posted in the right forum but here goes...

Over the last year or two I have been getting sh*t loads of spam from companies selling viagra, ciallis etc. Never bought anything and never wish to (hey, my rocket works just fine ) but they bombard me nevertheless. I tried using Rules in Mail to filter out words like viagra, but they also spell it different each time and sometimes send as images so the rules don't work too well. They also send from different email addresses each time and bouncing says there is no recipient

Please tell me there is something i can do to stop this crap!

Are you using Apple Mail or some other app? In Mail, go thru your inbox and mark the emails that are junk. After a few weeks I have found that Mail does a pretty good job of learning what is spam and what isn't.

Yeah I'm using Mail. I'll try flagging them as junk then and see what happens.

As a side note, the email notification of your post ended up in my trash due to the word viagra lucky i have it set to make a ping noise when something hits the rule!

I've noticed that all my spam is now mainly images so I block it using a 'subject' rule. There's only so many ways they can spell Cialis, C1alis, etc.

Here's my rules that work pretty well. You can just drop them into your Home/Library/Mail/ folder and you will get a message asking if you want to replace, select yes. There are two files that both have to be dropped straight on the mail folder.

You can always remove them and restart mail if you want

thanks Dogbone, but I have other rules which i would not want to lose that are not to do with spam. Can i use yours without deleting mine?



Have always had BIG rules in Mail and iTunes (smart folders) beacuse for some reason I found you can't specify several things using commas in one field - you have to have separate fields for each thing. Weird. The smart playlist i use to fit my fav tunes on my ipod is so long (have to add a new 'if' to it everytime i add a new song to make space) that it doesn't fit on the screen anymore!

Probably not.

You could take your files (both files, the rules and the backup) out of mail to your desktop and then drop mine in and have a look at them. You could then copy the subects to a txt file then drop yours back in and use the text file to add new subject rules. I think I've got most of them.

'image spam' is pretty easy to get rid of. Just work on the 'subject' only rather than the contents, you can usually pick out the unusual words.

You may want to start the training process anew, this will teach the mail app to identify junk. To do this go to: mail>preferences>Junk Mail>When Junk Mail Arrives> Leave it.

I don't actually know how well this would work, because my isp filters well by itself.

I too get this kind of viagra spam. It's not much of a big deal for me, since I only get one per month maybe. I just delete them.

Well, let's check my old yahoo account.. It's about 8-10 years old. And I cleaned it out last friday..

And there's currently: 2466 emails, all spam, in 1 weekend the day is young.

Once again, welcome to the internet. Spam is (and has been) a major problem for a very long time. Unfortunately, there's really nothing you can do as an end user to stop the flow. It pretty much ends up being similar to shoveling **** against the tide. What has to happen to stop it is for it to become anti-lucrative for spammers to do what they do. Via international laws, n00bs not clicking links to buy products, fines, jail sentences, law suits, etc. Once that happens, we'll be in a "better place".
