I have a 2009 (4,1) Mac Pro, Quad-Core 2.66
My current video card is Nvidia GeForce 120 that is really slow when it comes to rendering Aperture 3 files from my Hasselblad H4D 40 (40 MP) and Canon 5D cameras.

BTW Phocus is software for Hasselblad digital cameras.

I was thinking of getting an ATI Radeon 5770. Anyone has a better idea?

Thanks!

Nope. Probably makes the most sense as a 5870 would not show twice the performance on photo apps as it does in video games.

Both Phocus and Aperture do use the GPU to process images. I can't say what sort of benefit you'd actually see, as I haven't used Phocus in some time, but you would see some improvement with the better card.
