Nothing fancy, but I like using AirVideo. It converts and streams to your iphone/ipad, so you don't need to set aside space for your video. I'm getting the 16GB version, so space is precious. It's an iphone app at the moment, but it'll be a universal app once Apple approves it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Is that a definite that it'll become a universal app?

Screenshots for the iPad version of the AirVideo.

Would you say that program is better than handbrake?
In a way that its live conversion feature allows you to stream any formats that it can read to your devices without converting it on the computer and not taking up any more space. So yes, it's better.

Umm.. AURA is a Windows only program? If I was going to go that way, I'd use the tried and true Slysoft suite.

Still don't quite understand what AirVideo is all about. Generally speaking, I don't want to stream, I want to dump videos onto my device for later viewing (will be one of my primary uses for the iPad--now I won't have to work my middle-aged eyes so much to watch videos as I had been on the Touch).

What I really want is something like the iSquint/Visual Hub programs--something which will allow me to convert videos into an "optimized for iPad" format. Anyone out there developing something along those lines?

AirVideo will covert the video for you if you want to. It also acts as remote client for you to start queuing the converting on the server.

You can also try out Permute.

Handbrake is free and very popular for this type of converting.

DVDRemaster just released their latest software and it handles files for iPad. It is awesome software though a bit pricy. Sometimes if you watch carefully there are deals out there from Macupdate and Mac Heist that sometimes comes along. You need to grab those deals as they are really money savers.

Sooner or later I expect Handbrake to do a update and include a option for iPad settings as well. If you have no money to outlay on DVDRemaster then wait for Handbrake to come out with a update in the next few weeks.
