video editing question - please help!

for a class, i'd like to cut 1-minute clips out of five dvds to include in a presentation.

i was planning on using mactheripper to decrypt them, handbrake to make them mpegs, and then imovie to cut out my 1 minute. that sounds like it'll work just fine...except that it will take a really long time (i'm working on a 1.5/512 12" powerbook).

is there an easier way to do this?

Oh come on, he's not trying to distribute or anything... I'd say that's fine by our community standards.

In any case, I'd be glad to help. Handbrake does take a long time. On my DPG5, it takes about the same time it takes to play the movie, and muuuuuch longer on my powerbook. This is about the only way to do the task, and you're on the right track. just keep chugging along, and then use imovie to cut out the clips as you guessed.

The quickest way to do this is to plug a DVD player into your mac, via a FW Bridge or Camcorder. Then just record the bits you need. That way you will only have a few mins of DV instead of several hours. Saves time & disk space...

There is a program called Cinematize That allows you to pull sections off of a DVD.

Yes, it's TECHNICALLY illegal, but I wouldn't call it unethical. I have used movie clips for college presentations in the past and have not felt any sort of remorse about it.
I figure as long as you do not make money or distribute the copied materials, you are fine.

is it illegal? it's not a public performance (for educational use?)-fewer than ten people will ever see it. (and if i don't cut out the clips, i'll just have to show the dvd's, but it will be awkward for me to cue them up, etc.)

i think if u stop or eject a cd i forgot which one when u replay the movie it will ask you if u want to continue where u left off or not... i'm pretty sure this will happened. correct me if i'm wrong....

that's true, but i dont think it will work if i need to shuffle through a couple dvd's.

Yeah, it will only work for one DVD. I would jsut do the process you described earlier during the night, and when your not using your PB. That's what I used to do when I got new DVDs with my PB.

ok ppl.. mactheripper is pointless, as handbrake can read directly off a dvd.. then in handbrake, just choose the scenes you are going to take stuff out of.. not the entire thing.. THINK, PEOPLE, THINK...
