I'm looking for software for my M1 MacBook Pro that will make it easy to take an existing mp4 video file and drop new short segments into it from another video file, no audio just video. I tried with iMovie and its not thenesiest thing to do , but I am definitely a beginner. Any suggestions appreciated. of course not looking to spend hundreds of dollars to do this

Try Resolve. It may not be for beginners, but it’s free.

Give iMovie another shot. If you still find it frustrating, if you're willing to spend $100 you could use Adobe Premiere Elements or Cyberlink PowerDirector. They both come in Mac versions and are both easy to use and way more feature-packed than iMovie, but not as much as Resolve, Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
NCH VideoPad also comes in a basic free edition for the Mac, and if you like it a lot you can upgrade to the Professional Edition for around $100. It even lets you work with non-Mac video formats (like .AVI and .WMV)!
