video email limit 7MB/54 seconds

Hi. I do not see any discussions on this topic.

I have noticed for awhile now that the iPhone really stinks at emailing videos...the video clips must be under 60 seconds and typically the largest file I've been able to send is 7MB.

Since Yahoo and Google (both loved by Apple especially in the Email design of iOS) both have 25MB email limits, why are we being denied to send files larger than 7MB/60 seconds?! These 25MB limits have been in place for quite some time now. I understand that some non-web-mail providers only have 10MB or 15MB limits, but 7MB limitation is the dark ages! Surely Apple could whip up some code to allow sending larger files to email accounts. Here is a comparison of webmail providers:

Am I overlooking some setting somewhere? Or should I jailbreak my phone/touch? I cannot copy the file to my computer and then email it as the file size is 10x larger than what Apple compresses it to. Sure, I could buy my own software and compress it, but that's a big workaround for a $400 iPhone and $300 Touch.

It's extremely frustrating to take a 1-2 minute video clip of your child playing and then cannot send it via email.

I guess another set of questions would be: why is Apple even recording these vids in HD if I 1)cannot email them unless under 60 seconds 2)cannot email them except after compressed to 1/7th their size, 3)Apple makes no means via iTunes to get the full HD clips off my device!!! Even posting to Youtube is watered-down compressed clips.

Soooooo frustrating. I'm using an iPhone 4S and iOS 5.x by the way.

Unless you know someone's e-mail setup details, sending someone anything over 2 or 3 MB is an incredibly rude thing to do.

If you sent a 5 MB file to me at work it would keep me from getting any further e-mails until I dealt with it. Thus, you'd force me to deal with your e-mail RIGHT NOW even if I didn't want to do that this instant.

Yes, as you pointed out, many email systems now give lots of free space and some people have no problem with huge attachments. But have you kept track of which friends are which? Will you call and ask those for whom you don't know? Just because I have a G-Mail account that doesn't mean I'm not auto-forwarding it to other accounts sometimes. Yeah, G-Mail will be fine but then you clog up my Outlook at work.

Basic e-mail etiquette is to send links to online drives or other download services when dealing with such large files.

Apple is already being MORE than generous in what they allow here.

Yes, I want the ability to copy videos from my pc to an iOS device if Apple refuses to enhance iOS

What does this mean? I can do this through iTunes, through Documents Pro, through Stash, through Dropbox...

Please don't give me the email etiquette rant. I know everything you said already...and you are ASSUMING I am sending to folks with non-webmail based systems and ASSUMING I just blast out emails with large attachment to friends AND OTHER ASSUMPTIONS.

Don't assume. Read the post. Don't send nasty replies based on YOUR assumptions.

As for more clarification, I email MYSELF the videos (Gmail or Yahoo accounts) so our other iOS devices can download the email and play the video on that particular iOS device. Yes, I want it downloaded. I'll say it again...yes, I want it downloaded. I do not want it on Youtube.

Seems to me that Dropbox would be a better solution for you. Right now you're having to manually go to each device, open the e-mail, download the video, and erase the e-mail. An auto-syncing folder seems to be better for what you want, if you're just doing this between machines you own and control.

thanks...I didn't know Dropbox was an App...or that any app on the iPhone would allow the upload/download of videos.

I'll check it out in a few mins and reply later so folks know if this is a solution.

It does compress them, but honestly that's a good thing if you're constantly syncing stuff everywhere.

Also, the Dropbox compression is far, far, far better than the email compression. It still looks good on iOS screens. It's just not full sized. So it really should be great for what you want to do.

Save the original for posterity, but the smaller synced files should be great for watching everywhere. It doesn't look like e-mailed video.

Out of curiosity is the same limit present when sending an iMessage or MMS?

Dropbox is no help...I tried to upload a 1:25 video clip and it says I cannot because it is too large!!! I then looked at the Dropbox settings to poke around and I see that it is only uploading Medium quality Vids anyway! Sheeeez! After fiddling with DB it seems the max file size is 180MB. That stinks. I have 32GB and 64GB devices as well as 5GB of DB space and they're complaining about a 200-500MB file?! I'm not going to rant too much on DB but it's also nothing different than Youtube as I cannot DOWNLOAD onto another iOS device anyway.

Other ideas folks?

Do you get the same problem when sending the video via iMessage?

I've never had a problem sending larger files by email. The me.com limit is 25mbs. I've also done it on my iDevices through Gmail and msn.

I've sent videos as large as 20 mbs to one person and songs up to 9mbs to a friend. Neither is a random thing, however, I have full permission to do so.
