Video encoding software that allows change contrast/brightness?

Can anyone recommend software (.avi to .mp4, .mkv to .mp4, etc.) that will allow me to change the brightness and/or contrast of the video being encoded? Some scenes in certain movies are just too damn dark on my 3GS.
