iMovie can actually import some other formats of video, but I don't think MPEG1 is among them. Maybe Quicktime Pro? Actually, I don't think that'll work for MPEG1 files, either--Quicktime's support for those is weak at best.
I'd try out FFMPEG; it's an inexpensive piece of shareware, but it'll convert almost anything to almost anything else. I've used it to convert DV to DIVX, which is the sort of thing it's designed for, but it should do other conversions as well. At worst you can convert from MPEG 1 to a format that QT Pro will convert to DV, or iMovie can import directly (probably the same set of formats).
QT Pro, available for $30 from Apple, will export to DV and .mov both importable to imovie. However, QT does not export the audio. You will have to capture that separately using Sound Studio or even imove and dub it into your project.

Ok, then I guess my next question is this: Is there a cheap piece of software that will let me take these files (audio & video) and import them onto my computer so that I may put them on a website?
I am new to video, so sorry for the basic questions.
