video format converter

Can anyone recommend a good video format converter, like from .avi to .mpg? Versiontracker.com and Google aren't helping me ...

searching google for '"avi to mpeg" + mac' bought up loads of results. the first result i found linked to:

looks a little crude but should do what you're wanting. Looks like it only does MOV files to mpegs, but the page that linked to it seems to think it'll work with avi's too

I used to use avi2mov. That's gone now. Use divxDoctor. It is THE best app for the job.

You could just use Quicktime pro, assuming the avi will run, if not then Cleaner 6 will do the job, and it renders mpeg better than anything else short of broadcast hardware, but it's SSSSLLLLLOOOOOWWWW
