There seems to be a certain number of iPads that have problems playing back video. In any application, if you play back a video, after a certain period of time (seconds to an hour or so) the iPad will lock up hard. The only way to clear it is to hold the home button and standby switch until it reboots. Nothing shows up in the logs aside from a forced reset.
My 64GB 3G was one of the first to arrive on release day. It worked flawlessly during my out-of-the-box testing and I took it on a cross-country flight. 35 minutes into "The Pacific", it froze.
Later on that trip, the ABC application would freeze at least once per episode. Later, Youtube froze while my kid was using it, Air Video also started freezing. These issues were getting more frequent as the iPad either filled up, or just got older.
Sunday night it locked up three times in 20 minutes so I made an appointment at the local Apple store. Where it locked up for the Genius and they did a full restore (known not to solve the problem) and I said I'd give it another 24 hours. That night, instead of locking up, it now spontaneously reboots. ABC still locks up the iPad.
This morning, I have a new iPad, exchanged by the Apple store. It was a brown box special used for exchanges. So far, the new one looks flawless and tonight will be the real test as I burn it in playing videos.
Apple is aware of some iPads having video freezing issues. If you have this issue, it's best to take care of it while Apple is being generous in exchanges.
