Video on the Web

So here I am....

I'm going to be adding some video to an up and coming web site that is still in development at the moment, my main question is what would be the best overall support video format on the web and best quality?

Personally I am swayed for a Quicktime in H.264, at the moment I'm not sure about bit rate, audio, resolution, etc, but it has to be a small file size with reasonably good quality to match. I have Cleaner XL and Cleaner 6.5 so if you name the format, size, codec, etc I can render it to that and upload in one very simple click of the mouse key.

I would really like some advise because I'm in the positon were I want the best possible result for the client but I'll a little stuck for idea because I haven't done much web video/broadcasting before.

Flash isn't really practical for this instance, the video is of real-time renders of satellite and radar images plus it will be updated more than once a day (automated workflows).

Yeh, thats true.

Not all videos are alike so I can't really offer any suggestions other then do a comparison. I typically render out 3 or 4 variations of what I think looks to be the best options in codec, bit rate, etc.. and then pick from those. I also find that Compressor, does cleaner let you do that?, is really handy as you can preview the compression prior to export. I tend to use either H.264 or MP4. MP4 will be accessible to a larger audience due to it having been supported since QT 6.

but today I spent some time investigating the best solution for embedding video that is cross platform compatible and also sticking with standards compliance. Not a very fun task.
Here are a couple resources for your viewing pleasure:

or

Apple's solution for embedding quicktime (using javascript to generate object and straight coding with object tags)

Sorry if this is unnecessary info for you. Just figured that finding the appropriate video format wouldn't be frustrating enough.

I'm currently adding some videos to my website and have decided to go for Flash Video over QuickTime because not all Windows PCs have the QuickTime plugin installed and you need admin privileges to do so. The Flash plugin seems a bit more 'universal'. So far I've converted a few .movs to .flv format and even using low-quality settings to reduce file size, the results look pretty good.

I also found this SWFObject code for clean & simple embedding of the Flash video object.
