Video playback skips to the end

Quite frequently I find that when I try to play a video on my new 16" MacBook Pro (macOS Catalina 10.15.4) it immediately skips to the end. This happens everywhere - in Quicktime Player, in YouTube, on other web sites - everywhere! The only solution is to restart which fixes the problem for a while but then it happens again. I am sick of having to restart my Mac! However, I haven't been able to find anyone else having the same problem so it might be caused by something I have installed.

I have published to YouTube this screen recording showing the problem happening.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem, I thought it was my Mac Pro 2013, but then I got a new Mac Pro and migrated, still have the same problem, so its a software issue.

I guess you and I Thomas are the only ones with this VERY annoying problem!! :-(

Solution that worked for me: force quit the coreaudiod process. It will immediately relaunch, and video playback will be working once again.

Sure is quicker than re-booting!

I guess I should try and let Apple know as the best they could do after two different attempts to get assistance through AppleCare was to advise me to "Set up a new system and slowly add apps until the problem reoccurs"! I felt they should have at least have had some idea of what sort of app (or 'process') might be causing such a problem.

I have never had this on my old Mac Pro running Mojave, however it appeared on my new Mini with Catalina and now again with Big Sur. I know how to fix it temporarily using the above mentioned trick, but it comes back every few days and it's kind of annoying, so I wondered if anybody has found a more permanent solution?

Sadly, I can't use the "above mentioned trick" any more because 'coreaudiod' no longer appears in my Activity Monitor. So I'm back to having to re-boot every time to make the problem go away.

That's strange. I can still see it in Big Sur with the mini. It's about time Apple fixed this though.

I'm still using Catalina (10.15.7) on my MacBook Pro.

I am very disappointed to hear that it is still happening for you in Big Sur Ashley. I had, somewhat naively it seems, held out hopes that it would go away with the new release! :-(

Force quiting the coreaudiod process helps but then my FCPX becomes unusable (super slow), so I have to restart anyways.

I haven't had that problem Thomas (I've managed to be able to find 'coreaudiod' again). Does that happen for you every time?

Yeah, I get the beachball for 5 secs with every movement I do with FCPX.

Question: Anyone of you using Sonarworks? Seems when I quit and restart it it solves the problem, need to do some more testing tho.
