Video problems

Hi everyone,
I am having problems with video on my iBook in my signature. If you didn't already know, it has 8MB VRAM, which I thought was kind of low but whatever. Anyways, I downloaded Shrek 2 onto my computer using Mac The Ripper (I own Shrek 2 by the way). I did it because I don't have a DVD drive on my iBook. So when I play this Video TS file in VLC media player it is very choppy and unpleasant to watch. It almost makes me think that its only the file type that has this problem because when I play a fairly large AVI fullscreen in VLC it isn't choppy at all. Do you know why this is? Maybe something to convert it to an AVI ? I would just really like to make it better. And also If I play this fullscreen using a projector, will the video quality be reduced? Thanks alot!

I had a similiar bad experience with VLC and a DVD on a lower power PC laptop (about 533mhz I believe). Maybe it is just the program? Have you tried using DVD Player.app?

Thats caused by processor speed, not video ram.

DVD player won't open because I don't have a DVD drive on my iBook. Does anybody know how to make it better quality?

How do you rip the movie using MacTheRipper if you don't even have a DVD ROM in your computer?

You can try MPlayer OSX, but i usually get about the same results as with VLC. You don't have any pro video apps installed do you? I hear that cuts into VLC's performance. My guess is still that your iBook is just not powerful enough to decode mpeg-2 video in real time

Thanks I will try that. I downloaded this program to try to convert it: http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/12987 . If I can convert it, what should I convert it to, what is lowest quality in that program?

The app I downloaded doesn't work and MPlayer is no difference from VLC. Any other suggestions?

Handbrake is only gonna convert it to other processor intensive formats so I don't think its going to help. If you want to try though, leave the default settings there and set the aavg bitrate to somewhere around 1200 for close to dvd quality. I use handbrake all the time so i know it works, I can't tell if you are saying in your last post handbrake doesn't work or something else.

Yes in my last post, I said that handbrake does not work. It bounces a couple of times in the dock, and then disappears.
