Video Ram....I've tried this question before. Please Help!

This may sound like an elementary question but I need to ask. I am going to be running a 3 monitor display (adding two 24" displays) on my new IMAC and hooking them up via Thunderbolt port. Does the 2GB upgrade make sense, or is the thunderbolt port links to my external monitors pulling from RAM? Sorry for the dumb question but I am configuring the iMac for purchase. I think I will add more ram and get the stand GPU but need advice.

Depends what you want to do. For something graphics intensive, the 2GB upgrade makes sense but if it is just basic usage, then the 1GB is fine.
 
Hmm .. yeah 2Gb VRAM upgrade is quite decent money, not that cheap .. but not expensive either. but I think it´s worth the money. In the old days when processor was slower, amount of RAM has been helping a lot to increase performance, so I think for incoming years, when 6970M is no longer can hold the tooth, extra RAM (and this is ultra fast DDR5 RAM) would give it more room for breathing.

And for your case .. using 3 displays at once, most likely 2Gb VRAM is a no brainer upgrade

However, VRAM upgrade has prevent me to purchase this iMac along with AppleCare. I must delay it for purchase later this year since the budget is stretched further it´s a bit beyond my tolerance for iMac

I was told that the thunderbolt connected monitors pull from system RAM and not the video card. The 100 bucks is not the issue.....I just want to know if it pulls from the video card and not the system memory. Make sense?
