Hi guys,

so for some tests i just built a GTX 780 with 3GB in my Mac Pro5,1 essentially to test 3D Renderer like Octane and Thea in Cinema 4D.

After loading in a complex scene i saw, that i came pretty fast to the VRAM limit with it. To push it further i doubled the polygonamount so the VRAM would definitly be complete full. This just caused that the VidCard completely stopped rendering.

So here is my question: I was wondering if it's possible instead of completely denying just outsource some processes to the RAM. So that the GPU is still rendering like as much as the VRAM can take. Obviously it will be much slower, but maybe faster than a CPU only rendering.

thanks for your replies and have a nice day,
Jonas

Errr... not sure what your asking. Are you saying is there a way for the GPU to tell your software how much RAM is left and customize the workload accordingly?

I guess he mean" If there is not enough VRAM for the GPU to use, is there any way to tell the GPU use the system RAM to continue the job?".

Thats exactly the question. Unfortunately it seems like it is not possible with the current nvidia generation.
