Hi All,

Another potential use of the IPAD’s fab screen

Judge dredd, 200AD comics etc.

But is the GUI any good, or simply annoying and clunky, with bits missing off the pages etc?

I was hoping for something of a PDF of whole page, and you can scan around and zoom in as wanted.

I tried a Kindle sample of Judge dredd year one, and it was a mess. Is this just a bad example, or is it just a bad job From kindles implementation?

Any other Legit sources of sorted viewing of comics?

Regards
Martin

I don’t know about other countries but at least in the US, a lot of comics sold on Amazon Kindle store are “Kindle & comiXology” eligible.

I often buy from Amazon so I can use existing tools to DeDRM instead of the screenshot-based Comic Backup Chrome plugin. Then, I just read it on the comiXology app which is linked to my Amazon account.

Just borrowed Judge Dread Year One on Kindle Unlimited. It’s working fine for me on the Kindle app (shows full pages in portrait, double pages in landscape).

Did you enable panel view by any chance (activates/deactivates with double tap).

Hi Rui,

thanks for checking that mag 🙂

entire panel view? Will look for the option

I’m just using the version of kindle downloaded onto the iPad.

I 2nd Comixology. It is a great platform for reading comics on the iPad. They have a great intelligent view that goes from panel to panel with a tap, with excellent resolution, and you can zoom out to full page view at any time. Best way to read comics digitally IMHO.

Note that panel view shows the individual small panels (so just part of the page). It sounds like you want to exit that view and get the full page view to just zoom and pan manually.

I also prefer full page view myself (hence the reason for the iPad Pro 12.9). I never use panel view since everything's already nice and large on the iPad. In portrait, pages are displayed at the same size as modern comics (~ 6 5/8 x 10 1/8).

left to right: iPad Pro 9.7", physical comics, iPad Pro 12.9" (2nd gen)

Hello again Rui,

oh, that will be where I’m going wrong. I have the iPad in landscape mode, mounted on the magic keyboard.

If I rotate onto portrait mode, in the Kindle app, will the full page come up like you’ve got in the photo?

Read a bit of Judge Dredd you one tonight, happy days, but yes, would like to see the whole page and zoom in if I can!

Regards
Martin

You probably have vertical scroll mode enabled. You can disable it via the Aa options.

The above was using the Kindle app.

While Amazon has incorporated some comic reading features from comiXology into their Kindle app, the comiXology app is still leaps and bounds above Kindle. It features better categorization, searching, browsing and content discovery. The comiXology apps comic reader options are also far more refined. For comic reading, I wouldn't bother using the Kindle app at all.

By the way, some publishers such as Image and IDW sometimes offer Humble Bundles for their comics (in DRM-free PDF or CBZ/zipped images format). That's a pretty good way to get $100s worth of comics for cheap. Plenty of comic reader apps on iOS available for those. I personally use ComicGlass.

Morning Rui,

wow, thanks for the info, I’ll look into the comiXology app 😀

Did i read right., I can sim[ly use that app, against the kindle mags I’ve bought?

Amazon owns comiXology. Some comics, you can buy on Amazon Kindle store and they’ll transfer over to the comiXology app. At least this is the case on Amazon US. I don’t know if this program is available in other countries.

The product page clearly shows whether it’s eligible or not. Note, books borrowed via Kindle Unlimited don’t transfer over. It’s just for purchased books.

This one (Publisher: IDW) is eligible.

P.S.
You need to use Sign In with Amazon on the comiXology app to acess Kindle & comiXology eligible comics.

Hi Rui,

Many thanks for the screenshots on how to do all the settings etc. ✌️

Made my weekend! 😀

have you tried a screen protector like “Paperlike 2”??

does the comic reading picture quality suffer using them?

Best wishes

Martin 😀

I installed a matte screen protector for marking up PDFs with the Pencil. The rainbow effect gave me major eye strain and headaches so I just ended up replacing it with tempered glass (so I don’t go scratching my screen).

Eye strain? That’s sounds a nightmare 😳

Glad you got it sorted with tempered glass instead 👍

Did that affect the screen quality? I read on large surfaces tempered glass does strange halo effects effects

Do note, the matte screen protectors are a dream to write on. Tempered glass is nowhere near as nice to write on but at least they prevent microscratches on my iPad’s screen and don give me headaches.

I think the halo effect is usually due to air bubble/gap. I try to be very careful during application to avoid those.

Are you guys into Marvel comics? I’m more into the mutant stories like X-Men. Reading comics on my iPad Air 3’s laminated screen via kindle is like the real thing, some people at work actually thought I was reading from a real paper comic book!

Lol, I actually find the colors on the iPad to be a lot better. The physical comics can be pretty washed out.

Is there a place were one can read the original (inception thru 79) Spider-man, Superman and Hulk comics?
I don't believe Marvel's been able to digitize everything yet but the Marvel Unlimited subscription service has a lot of them at a very affordable monthly or annual subscription price. Marvel Unlimited is a completely separate app from the Marvel Comics app (powered by comiXology).

On Amazon/comiXology, there are a number of Marvel Masterworks editions as well collecting Marvel Golden Age and Silver Age comics. Single issues are available as well but they're more expensive to buy this way.

Superman/Action Comics, DC has Golden Age and Silver Age omnibuses, and again, single issues.
