Virtual PC G5 question...

Since we all know that VPC won't work with the G5 because of a processor architecture optimization done by Connectix w/ the G4... this is my question...

Since MS bought out Connectix... they are in a very unique position. Do you think they will truly optimize VPC for the G5 now, or intentionally cripple it? There is a chance that the new G5 version will run as slow on a dual 2.0 GHz G5 as it does on a dual 1.42 GHz G4.

Microsoft likes to kill off competition, so crippling and eventually killing VPC is an option. They also like to get up everyone's ass, so keeping VPC is good for them and I think this is what they'll do. If they can get Windows onto every Mac they'll get to further their market share and include Mac users in whatever their eventual master plan is. They're already bundling VPC with Office (which makes no logical sense--it is just spreading the virus basically). They'll find a way to make Mac users dependant on them via VPC.

But can you expect a fast, stable, optimized version of VPC? It's Microsoft, what do you think? They just want to move their stuff into your house--they don't care if you're comfortable.

These conspiracy theories grow tiresome. Yes, Microsoft is a "big bad business"....

but people, the Mac Business Unit of Microsoft is an _Actual_ Mac Developer unit. The people who code the applications are actual people who use Macs, perhaps, I say - even like Macs.

The goal of the MBU is to make money.

... oh ... and we DID land on the moon too before you start asking...

If I were Microsoft, I'd make VPC as fast and stable as possible...

Of course, then they could just use it to force every Mac user to run Windows, too. Then developers will stop developing for the Mac. M$ will stop developing Mac versions of Office and WMP. Then they put in lots of DRM and secretly screws with OS X while sending them your private info so they can blackmail you just like they're doing with the government. Then, when it becomes absolutely necessary to use, they'll jack up the price and make it run worse than it ever has. Or just discontinue it. Then they'll own the WORLD!!!

Anyways this is probably more ineptitude and a desire for marketshare than a conspiracy. I'm no M$ lover, but it's more because of their arrogance and often not-so-good software.

Though you have to admit, they have been guilty of anti-competitive behavior in the past. A bunch of times. WAY more than Apple. MacBU is one thing, but Microsoft in and of itself is kinda scary. Considering the power they have (especially considering the problems they have) is it any wonder why people are wary of them? Or hate them?

We like MacBU, though. Without them (thanks to M$'s monopoly), we'd be screwed. We need M$ (though they need us, too).

Yeah, you have a good point. If the G5 ran Virtual PC really well, I'm sure that would be a huge selling feature to A LOT of switchers. Either way MS makes money, so... lets hope.

Arn and the others are right - Microsoft is a business... why would they shut down their MacBU and VPC when they can make more money by keeping it going?

Windows and Office are Microsoft's main money-makers... if they can sell just as many licenses to mac users as to PC users, they've still won in their books.

i don't know about that. if i was in the president's situation, i would just fake it. it's far cheaper, and it would get the same effect from the public. i get the feeling that the US government (at the time) spent waaaay too much money on something that didn't work out right (or would look bad on paper), so they covered up the expenditure by saying 'we landed on the moon'. i would if i was faced with that situation - this type of lie doesn't hurt the public one bit.

You sure about the bit where it wouldn't hurt the public on bit? How about even less credibility?

credibility is not an issue if everyone (or almost everyone) believes you. as for hurting the public, whether or not someone actually lands on the moon has no effect on anyone back on earth.
