Is virtual pc 6.0 a great software for the mac. We have pc's and we might get a 17" tibook so it would be nice to know if it compares to virtual pc 5.0 and what os for virtual pc do you recommend. Please help a newbie here.

Well it's not really great by comparison to the real thing... maybel 25% of the speed? if you've used VPC before, you know it's slow. but it works for basic specific programs that don't have a mac equivilant...

what kind of software are you using, there's probably something for mac that will eliminate your windows dependancy..

If you must use VPC, you must...I agree that thereis probably a mac equivalent program for your needs...but to your questions. VPC 6 is marginally faster than 5, but again it is still slow to the real thing. As to an OS to use...I have always used WIN98SE on VPC, it is a little unstable, but ironically perhaps, it is much easier to deal with a crash within VPC than on an actual PC. 2000 is also a good bet...much more stable. If you have used VPC you probably know that you can load up multiple OSs, so if you have many microsoft OSs try out as many as you like...although on an emulator I would stay away from XP and ME for their resource-intensiveness. Slightly unrelated, but ME drivers work perfectly with 98SE if you are worried about a dated OS. Hope this was helpful...

I am running VPC 6.0.1 on a 12" Powerbook and possibly on an eMac at our office. I was wondering if anyone has ever figured out a way to run a PC box in a window on a mac (10.2.4)? Did I get that W2K is faster than XP Pro. I guess I could use 98, it's usually very unstable. Thanks in advance.
OH GOD...VIRTUAL PC IS A PAIN IN THE @$$. but thats just my personal opinion. How can it go so slow a DP 1Ghz with 1.25GB of ram. I already have it like half of my resources. What programs do you need to run on it anyways?
I tried the VPC 6.0 DOS version and sent it back. I loaded my copy of XP home and allocated a great deal of RAM to it. It crashed unmercifully and was a complete dog. I understand that purchasing VPC 6.0 with Windows 2000 is the best route.

with microsoft buying it though i have to wonder about the future of the product. since ms has access to windows source code they have the potential to make a much better product, but considering they have already dismantled most of the vpc team i think we will see vpc fade away.
an alternatove is WinTel 1.0 from openosx.org. i haven't had an opportunity to try it out yet but from what i hear it is a very good start (version 1.0 and all). link

I checked out MS site regarding Remote Desktop (XP PRo) and it appeared as though you have to use some form of windows to control a windows box. A cacth 22 unless I missed something, very possible. What app or ??? would you use to control the PC box with XP Pro on it? Thanks again. (I'm sitting here downloading 10.2.4 on my "new" refurbished eMac. This "little" (50 lbs.) box is a very respectable machine for general productivity, etc. I have to have access to a PC, hence all the fuss. I am thrilled to be back!
