If there is anyone in the UK here please help me
i have got windows XP already and i just want to buy virtual pc however i cannot find a version which allows you to run your own os but i think there is one
can someone give me advice to run windows programs on my mac
i am on a tight budget

You want VPC 6 DOS edition, with this you don't pay for an OS and can load your own. You should be able to pick it up anywhere, they sell it at the UK Apple Store.

Why not ask people who've used Real PC? I haven't. Although I have used VPC -- at least an earlier version of VPC DOS and had no problems. I guess it depends if: 1.) You can wait until you get other people's feedback, 2.) whether you want to wait to get other people's feedback, 3.) and whether you want to simply buy the VPC Dos version or now. Best of luck!

I have been using VPC 6.0 DOS + Win 98. I find it rather slow and it tends to crash quite a bit. I have also used it with XP home and found it exceptionally slow. I allocated 512 megs RAM (I have a DP 1.25 with 1 Gig RAM). My advice would be to make sure you have as much RAM as you can possibly allocate in the setup process.

The OS loaded without too many problems. I only use VPC when I absolutely have to. It was easy to set up the printer but does not allow my modem to work correctly. Perhaps Real PC will be better... or perhaps I will need to wait for the next version of VPC to be available - perhaps many of the bugs will finally be resolved.

One thing is for sure... if you choose to use VPC + your Win XP software, you will be spending quite a bit of your time tweaking settings and discovering just how resourceful you have to be to get it to perform at an acceptable level. Advice: lower your standards re. efficiency and reliability when using VPC or you will indeed be sorely disappointed.

Personally, I wouldn't really recommend it. I'm running VPC 6 with XP and it's painfully slow. I only bought it so I run Kazaa and Soulseek, and it can just about cope with that, but only just. It is pretty unreliable too, I've had it about 2 months and i've had to reinstall windows on it 3 times. Most recently it just developed a disk error which prevented any files from being written to disk. It does work, but it isn't great, don't think about running anything which requires any speed at all - even the most basic of games.

I'm not a PC zealot, so nobody flame me for saying this, but a lot of people try to convince themselves that running VPC is as good as owning a PC - it really isn't. If I were you, i'd save your money, scrape together £300 and buy an ultra cheap pc, it'll run a billion times better.
