Anyone know if the iPhone truly takes advantage of free flash memory space for the OS overhead?
I read somewhere that keeping a little space freed up can help things run smoother, but it doesn't seem like that's the case, for me anyway. I have 1GB free and I still get Safari/iPod crashes, stuttering songs, etc. If those instabilities are caused by memory issues, then the free space idea isn't helping.
I've noticed that after a reset, apps, widgets and the home screen open and close much snappier. But within a day or so, things bog down again. This seems indicative of RAM allocation and management problems.
I'd happily give up 250-500mb of space for a stable OS. I would also have paid the exact same price for the phone if Apple had advertised it as 7GB iPhone, with the extra gig devoted entirely to overhead.
