I was just wondering if Vista is really as bad as people have been saying. I bought it thinking it would be the best for my games, and then the more reading i did it seems that it's just eye candy and nothing else. So why can they claim that your suppose to get more out of your computers with Vista? Justing wonder what your thoughts are..I'm pretty much forced to install Vista on my MBP now. :-( (I don't have enough money to but xp pro sp2)

Contrary to what a lot of folks will have you believe, you'll be fine. XP can be a bit faster than Vista in some aspects, but it's not noticeable to the average user. In other words, the few FPS that you'll be lacking while gaming will be unnoticeable. That said, I can't stand Vista's UI - it's really bulky and not exactly friendly. Since you've already paid for vista, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Anyone else thinking about "upgrading" to vista may as well wait for windows 7, which is due in "3 years". Heh...

Oh, and this is my first post, so welcome me!

Over the next year Vista will continue to be improved. XP will be phased out eventually.

As far as gaming: Although Windows XP will support DirectX 10, Vista was created with the foundations of DX10 in mind. You can expect the most anticipated games of the year (Crysis, anyone?) to run with more efficiency (it's hard to believe, I know) on Vista. Most of the performance and usability issues will resolve themselves as we near the first service pack. As time moves (far) forward, you'll see less and less support for Windows XP and more for Vista. Current games reportedly do run more efficiently on XP, but, as lesfleanut points out, the difference is insubstantial.

I've been using Windows since the dawn of time. This is how Microsoft's product release cycle work. There's a short "breaking-in" period we all have to endure before we're presented with something functional.

Off topic: Thanks, though it's a bit dated to be honest... I used the name to join a bass players forum in 99 or 2000, I used a mashup of my three favorite bass players at the time: Les Claypool (primus), Flea (RHCP), and P-Nut (311). I know, it's kind of lame, but stuck as my internet moniker. People call me les for short. In keeping with my off topic rant, do we have an IRC network?

OK, enough of that... BlueArctos hit the nail on the head, you will find a lot of discouraging articles about vista (and microsoft in general), but they should be taken with a grain of salt. Most early vista adopters outside of the ultra-critical technical community have pleasant things to say about the OS.

I've got Vista running on my macbook pro, and it run well. There's compatibility issues with some software that even the compatibility mode can't rectify, but that's very custom software which you'll probably never be using. The only other gripe that I have with Vista is that when I connect my external monitor it will only run at 1024x768 even though the native resolution of the panel is 1280x1024. OS X drives the monitor with not problems though. This probably isn't really a big issue if you're just going to be gaming though.
