vista retail sound installed "x" by speaker

i have a macbook pro and just installed vista business. i ran the apple installers just like with vista beta and everything installed including bluetooth. but the icon for sound still has an "x" in fromt of it and i am getting no system sound. i have searched these boards for 2 days and downloaded 10 different drivers for vista sound but no luck, most of them install fine and the device manager says everything is fine but it is clearly not.

anyone run into this problem?

I don't know if this is going to help or not. I installed Windows 2003 Server, and in order to install the sound driver from Boot Camp Driver CD, I had to install a hot fix first: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=901105.
