Ya, the modbook is the closest you can get. Did they ever start shipping? I'm content with my X61 tablet, but I'd prefer a slightly thinner and OSX running one.

MacOS X is object oriented. Almost everything that you need for a table computer is already part of MacOS X. Don't forget that the iPhone/iPhone 3G and iPod touch run OS X. A larger format tablet may need to have some existing features fleshed-out, but it would not require major additions or rewrites.

The fastest way for human beings to enter data into computers is to type it in. Inkwell will work for certain applications, but not for general-purpose computing. Sophisticated Multi-Touch gestures greatly enhance the computing experience, but they are not substitutes for traditional data-entry methods.

Apple has not introduced a Mac tablet because there is virtually no evidence that a market for such a device exists.

No one else has succeeded at it (despite many attempts and gadzillions of dollars).

The only way Apple would do this is if they had something up their sleeve that completely redefined what a tablet is. And a Mac that happens to be a tablet is not that redefinition.

The iPod touch/iPhone as a platform might be, though.

There is a very, very small slice of the market for which a Tablet PC is the ideal computer. This slice is not likely to grow in the near future, so the devices will always be a niche within a niche. Not something with which Apple wants to get involved.
