The install/update of the bootcamp 1.4 drivers went in smooth. The only new annoying problem now is Vista on my Macbook pro is Windows won't reboot. Just hangs at a black screen after the BONG sound. Gotta hard power down, wait a few seconds then power back up.

Thing that blows is windows is always wanting to reboot, especially when your trying to get a fresh install up to spec with all the programs you use on a regular basis.

Anyone else have this problem??

Yes, I'm having that problem too, and it also happened for me in 1.3. It appears to be related to the video drivers as I have the same issue in XP if I install the X1600 driver update from AMD's site. Interestingly I haven't seen anyone else mention this (although I haven't actively searched) so it'll be interesting to see how many people it's happening to.

Do you have an ATI or nVidia-based system?

I don't advise any Mac users to install ANY drivers from the ATI website. Use the drivers supplied with Boot Camp. Especially if your ATI card is a Mobility (in iMacs and MacBooks).

ATI cards are iffy under Windows, anyway. ATI/AMD have never been able to release a stable Windows driver. The best cards to use under Windows are nVidia-based. Of course, I've heard that nVidia can't seem to release a stable OS X driver, so what is a Mac owner who wants to use Windows via BC to do?

I only installed it because I was trying to get HD DVD playback working. I haven't actually tried my current solution using the Apple-supplied driver but I don't want to have to reinstall everything again.

I don't quite understand what you mean by "reinstall everything" again Do you mean "reinstall everything again from the ground up, including the OS"?

If so, that is simply not necessary. If the ATI driver installed at all, you will be able to uninstall it from "Control Panel->Programs & Features" (in Vista), or
"Control Panel->Add/Remove Software" (in XP). This does require a reboot.
This will leave you with a generic VGA driver under XP or Vista, so you should be able to install the Apple Boot Camp Windows driver.

To do this, it's not necessary to reinstall ALL the drivers again. Just open the Drivers Disk in Explorer (DON'T let the Installer begin), and find the installer for your card and start it. Only the ATI driver will be installed.

To find the driver installer, choose to explore disk, open the folder named "Drivers", find your card type. In my case, it is "ATI". If your Apple uses an nVidia card, open the folder named "nVidia".

The Vista driver installer will be named "nVidiaMobilesetup.exe" (if that is your card), or "nVidiaSetup.exe" (if you do not have a Mobile card".)
The XP driver installer will be named "nVidiaXPsetup.exe". You can figure out the file names for Vista, I'm sure.

Same drill for ATI cards.

This goes for ALL the necessary drivers. They may be installed individually manually, or all at once, with no input from the user.

Some devices have necessary ENABLERS. You also have to run these after the requisite driver is installed.

Simple stuff, really.

Apple has been very careful to make sure it is easy to do manually, if necessary. Thanks, Apple!
