It seems that Apple has left in a visual bug for iPadOS 15 in portrait mode -- or at least I *hope* it's a bug, since otherwise it's just a terrible design change.
I unfortunately do not have a screenshot of how this looked on previous versions, and I've had a great deal of difficulty in trying to find a picture of Messages in portrait mode on the last few versions of iOS. Maybe the popularity of landscape use is pat of why this wasn't caught (especially by a .1 release...), but regardless we will have to do without a point of comparison.
Here is how it looks now, on my 2019 iPad Mini:
I was also able to verify the same issue exists on a 5th Gen regular iPad. Restarting the app and the device does not resolve this. For anyone thinking this looks correct, perhaps because you have not seen the proper proportions for some time, consider a point of comparison to any other app with the "two columns" division:
The only exceptions I've seen are apps with a "slide over" menu that disappears while on content, such as Mail and Contacts, which have a wider left column. I am not certain if the proportions were different on these before.
Most interestingly, you can actually see the correct division pop up when the app has been fully closed in multitaksing and is re-opening, before it's fully loaded:
I'm guessing it's a bug rather than a purposeful change as it a) gives less space to the primary content, b) is inconsistent with other similar Apple applications, and c) interferes with other new UI elements:
Just getting the word out there as no one seems to have mentioned this from what I can see outside of a forum post with zero responses, so hopefully this can be fixed in a future update.
