Visual voicemail notification

Ok so I noticed something strange with my visual voicemail notification on my T-Mobile iPhone 6. I believe it has to do with using wifi calling. When I have it enabled, when I receive a voicemail it sends me a txt with the message translated and telling me to call a number to listen. There will be a message in the voicemail section but no little dot saying so. But if I turn off wifi calling I will get the little red dot above the voicemail saying how many messages I have. Is that normal?
