Visual Voicemail Sound Quality

When I listen to messages through visual voicemail, the sound is very tinny, almost like the person leaving the message was talking into a tin can. However, when I call into my voicemail and listen to the mssages over the phone, the quality sounds fine.

Has anyone else experienced this, or is the voicemail quality okay for everyone else?

Sound quality has been ok with me- not great, mind you, but ok. I have noticed, however, that I always accidentally have my finger over the speaker- that will take me some getting used to.

I've got the same thing - tinny voice when going through Visual Voicemail.

I assume this is due to the voice signal coming via data (is it?) and not a normal phone call.

this may sound like a smart-@ss response but im serious: did you try hitting the speakerphone button?
that's how i've been listening to all my voicemails and i haven't had any problems what-so-ever. and i'm usually one that complains about cell phone speaker volumes. maybe try that? i know it means that anyone can hear your voicemails but mine are usually not of any importance.

i too have been having a very metallic voicemail messages... call quality is great otherwise... has anyone tried talking to apple about this or exchanging the phone?? is this grounds to do so??

Yea, this is a proven fact, its been posted around the forums as well as various iPhone guides. This is because its a lower quality audio file that is stored on your phone as a copy of the original voicemail thats in the att system. You can always call and hear the original, but its so much cooler being able to delete without listening to the voicemail(my gf leaves ALOT of useless voicemails).

Does that mean it remains in the system even after it is deleted from your phone?

how long can voicemails be stored on the iPhone? Is there a time limit like how it used to be? [i think it was 14 days before max]

The quality isn't good enough to add some garageband music to the person's message and submit it to a record label to sell it as an original song. And then have it cost 99 cents on iTunes to play on your iPod.

But at it is good enough getting messages from people.

yep, buzzy, it's called aliasing

its just a low sample rate, like 8 bit 11khz. It's space saving feature. So more data bits can be stored in less space.

I could get into the technical reason of why it sounds buzzy and tinny, like since there are less audio bits, they are inherently further apart from one another, and since your brain draws a connection line between each bit it looks more sawtooth like a stock chart than a smooth flowing wave, making it a jagged buzzy sound.... but I don't want to bore you

Does anybody know if this is a wav file or a QT mpeg?

Since it resides in the phone, I would hope we will be able to keep the voicemail message as along as we like and maybe, with later updates,
save it as a file.

yea, I have the problem too where if I just hear it, it sounds tinny.

Through the Speakerphone setup, it sounds better but if I put it up to my ear, it sounds very tinny

I have this problem as well and it's only since I took the 2.1 upgrade. Prior to that, it was fine....very annoying as it's crap quality

I have the same problem after upgrading to 2.1. My wifes iPhone does it to and hers is a different model (8 GB) if that even matters. But it is annoying that it sounds so tinny. I assumed it was a lower bit rate by the way it sounded and it must have had something to do with the recent update. Before this it sounded fine.
