Came across an article on Vivian Maier this morning in the New York Times (non-paywalled link included for you). Her exhibit recently opened at a gallery in NYC. There was an interesting section about how she rarely had darkroom access, and so for the few times she did how she ended up cropping her square negatives to other ratios. I rather like her squares, but it makes one wonder her true vision for an image as she took it since it wasn't easily cropped without a darkroom. The counterpoint to that though, is that it doesn't make her any less of a photographer, having only negatives (and perhaps square proof prints) vs someone who had regular access to a darkroom. She was nothing if not prolific. Thirty thousand negatives.
How Groundbreaking Is Vivian Maier’s Photography? (Gift Article)
She was a supremely gifted chameleon. But even in her striking new exhibition at Fotografiska, Maier remains in the shadows.
