VLC App pulled from App store

Like every other app that has been pulled, it will simply not be updated or available for further sale. The only time an app is actually removed from your device is when the 'kill switch' is activated. Most people can tether because of some software or a work-around in software that allowed it. The apps were later removed from the store, but people retained the ability because the 'kill switch' was never activated on those items.

Even though I don't use the App anymore, this is getting stupid in my opinion. I have never thought anything of the previous Apps Apple have removed, but this was a damn good App with absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I hope Apple changes their mind.

Yes but only in the minutia. The licence stipulates no copy restrictions, which of course you can't do with apps bought from the app store, as they're tied to the account holder's iTunes account. So, despite being free, the fact that you can't move the app from one person's iPhone to another broke the terms.

Interestingly, the only person to complain and issue the takedown notice was a Nokia employee. Wonder why ...
 
I think this is SO ridiculous. It should've stayed there. Now onto getting the source, setting up a Github repository where devs can get the goodies and branch out new features :)
 
Its bad of cource. But its not apples fault. Vlc is under gnu license when as ioos and the particular app are both under closed source kicense. The app wasnt even made by videolan group. It was made by some random guy.
 
I'm really surprised that it got taken down. Such a great app :( Very disappointed considering I thought the whole VLC team were supportive of their userbase growing.
 
There was a warning about this, on this forum before. I nabbed it before they took it down, per se. It's backed up and timemachined. Hopefully, this will keep it from being lost. Anyway, I don't use it a lot, but I've been sent things like WMV files and VLC came to the rescue then. Particularly when in conjuction with Dropbox.

As long as you keep the .ipa file, and remember the login details for the account you bought it with you can install the app onto any device you wish to sync with.

Just to be up front.. what was really the purpose of it? I installed it and never really saw a use for it. Maybe i'm missing something?
 
VLC could play quite a few video formats/codecs without requiring you to first re-encode it before importing into iTunes. This made it very easy to put on DivX movies (just drag and drop). Interface was a bit short and a couple of bugs, but the convenience of just watching movies in native form (i.e. whatever they were originally encoded in) rather than wasting time/space in re-encoding it was a godsend!
 
TUAW covered this here and here. The bottom line is that one of VLC's programmers asked Apple to remove VLC from the app store due to perceived violations of VLC's GPL - this was not done on Apple's own initiative (for once). I hope Apple will create some sort of plank in their App store user licence for GPL applications so this ceases to be a problem.

I think we need just wait a little bit until a new App will appear and for a price, will give the same functionality as Vlc. :mad:
 
Buzzplayer will do exactly what VLC player did and better.

It allows direct play without file conversion, variable zoom, full screen play, will play 5.1 encoded ac3 xvids which VLC couldnt do and lots lots more. Well worth checking out..

Ive been using it for a long time now and its played every file format ive thrown at it. It even has a built in web browser allowing you to download music/films etc directly to the phone/player.
