VLC better than QT?

Does anyone else feel that VLC is a better media player than QT? I like it because of the expandable window feature and the fact it will play all my .avi formatted files?

What are your opinions?

I love VLC. One great feature on it is the web interface, which allows you to control the video playback on a remote computer. Thus, if you have a "media center" computer hooked up to your TV, you can open the web interface in a browser on another computer (for example your laptop) and choose what videos you want to watch, rewind and fast forward, etc.

I guess you could argue that with Quicktime + Frontrow + Apple Remote you can do pretty much the same thing though...

I prefer VLC because it can handle more formats, but I certainly keep and use both.

I leave QT as my default player, but 99.9999999% of the time, if it won't play in QT, it will play in VLC. And for that, I love VLC!

Exactly. And with all the codecs installed QT plays virtually everything. But for those few times where it doesn't I love VLC too. Now all I need is a real media plug-in for QT

QT to me feels like a more solid player. This may be because I'm working with a beta version of VLC universal biniary (I'm not sure if the real deal is out yet) but QT rarely gives me distortion when I fast forward and just feels better to work with. However VLC plays just about any file straight out of the box, which is amazing. I always try QT first but I usually end up with VLC. All I can say is that VLC is a lifesaver.

QT is missing a massive feature that VLC has: Playlists. I.e. the ability to load videos in order and play them. This for me means that VLC gets used 99.9% of the time.

Not even close to the quality as QT. Only thing going for VLC in the DVD department is the ability to bypass many of the manufacturer's settings on dvds.

yes, i'm wondering that too. I'd prefer to make QT my main player, but it can't handle enough formats as-is. Some codec help would be very much appreciated!

I'm sure there are more but those are the ones I use. Links are in the MacBeginner's Guide in my sig. The big + is that this way QT plays wmv3 too which VLC doesn't.

True but the only time I really need playlists for videos is for music videos and for that I use iTunes.

VLC all the way baby. I never use QT anymore. It can even play bin/cue files!

VLC has another advantage not yet cited here: it allows you to play higher bandwidth codecs on a given hardware setup than QT does. For instance, one of my macs, a 1.42 ghz G4 mini, chokes on 1280 x 720 HD video - tons of stutter, dropped frames, etc. but with VLC it plays smooth as butta. They both choke on 1080 of course

until i find a working AC3 intel codec, i'm stickin to VLC. I like qt's zoom function and how i can fastforward/rewind some parts during full screen. one feature i REALLY would like for VLC to work on.

You mean decoding AC3?
