I used VLC to convert a DVD to mp4 yesterday (H.264+AAC). I tried playing it on my computer in VLC and it played fine. I changed the extension to m4v and imported it into iTunes and played it on my AppleTV. The AppleTV did not play the sound track, the video was stuttering and shaking. I tried playing it in iTunes (QuickTime) same thing as AppleTV. But VLC plays it fine. I find it hard to believe VLC isn't converting something uncompatible with Apple Products as someone would have found this bug, but does anyone know how I can fix it? Would an another encode from mp4 -> mp4 (hopefully that won't take long) using different software do the trick. Or do I need to just use other software with the DVD.

Also its not the DVD source that causing this error, I tried using VLC to convert FLV - MP4 (same settings) and the AppleTV produced stuttering I figured it was because of the FLV but now I realise its the file VLC outputs.

Thanks in advance.

I would just start from the beginning using different software with the DVD. I've been using Handbrake to convert, and the nice thing is they have a pre-set for Apple TV.

Thanks for the reply.

Thing is the media server I use to rip my DVD's is old. Its a windows XP machine 2GB Ram, 1.5 GHz. Handbrake runs fine on my Mac, but I really don't want to wear out my Mac by ripping/encoding. Handbrake works on my media server its a 20 min rip then a 13 hour encode with Handbrake. (Painful, but tolerable, I can knock out around 14 discs a week). VLC does it much faster, I'm sure it sacrifices something along the way but I don't even care anymore. So I'd really just like to get VLC to work with my AppleTV.

PS: It's ATV2

You mean I'm wearing out my shiny new iMac doing all these encodes? I'd better pack it away in the box and fire up my ancient Vista PC again. 15 minutes? No thanks, I'd rather wait all night and save my iMac machine cycles...

First of all I don't even have an iMac.

I have a 2009 Model of the Mac Mini. I develop a little for the iPhone on the side and needed to do that work. That is the sole purpose of that machine.

I have a new Windows Laptop, but obviously thats no good for ripping and encoding.

The XP Machine just runs iTunes all day and feeds content to my ATV, whats wrong with that? It's an old machine, and I don't care what happens to it. However if I break my Mac Mini, (it gets super hot, when encoding, and ripping) and in that little tiny box, I feel like it is wearing out the computer. And I don't want to break my iPhone development machine ripping DVD's on it.

(PS: I was a Windows Fanboy turned Mac by the Mini, but just not ready to drop more money on an iMac, when I get one I want it to be a higher-end model, and a newer model)

Anyways because I have to use that XP Machine to encode (13 hour handbrake, which I don't mind) I just thought it might move along faster with VLC if I could get it to work.

Now please back to the original question, Thank You. ;)

why dont you just get a propoer streaming box ? e.g. with the wdtvlive I have not come yet across a format which it wouldn't accept, including DVD ISOs, no converting required...
