iPod vlc converting to .mp4

ok...i have a couple .avi movies that i am trying to convert over to .mp4 so i can put them on my ipod.

however, when i try and convert them i keep getting different kinds of errors. they work fine when i play them in my vlc player, however, the conversion process doesnt work.

mpeg4 doesnt give me much luck either.

does anyone have any advice?
