Hey folks,

Looking like I'm getting an APple Tv from christmas this year.

I wanted to know if anyone knows if I'm able to stream avis directly from VLC (the older discontinued app) to the ATv box without requiring a PC/Mac.

If not is there another way to do so...this Plex or aTVflash I've read a little about...can they do it (without a PC I mean).

I could JB my iphone4 to get airplay mirroring but I'd rather find an alternative measure first. (I remember my 3G JB days being very sluggish)

Any advice/help would be great.

Cheers

QuickTime has an AirPlay feature. Perian plugin should let you play avi and other non-native qt formats in QuickTime with AirPlay out to the ATV.

The OP is talking about AirPlaying (non-mp4s) from their iPhone.

My mistake. You could try one of the apps like Cinexplayer (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cinexplayer-the-best-way-to/id391790896?mt=8) or something like it to play avi files to ATV.

edit: The VLC mobile app does indeed include an airplay option. So yes, this would be another alternative if you acquired the VLC app for iOS.

Are you saying the VLC app that was pulled a while back does airplay? Just never seen the option. I don;t have the new VLC app (yet) but my belief was that it could airplay but that it acted as a ink between Mac and aTV?

Ideally, it's so if I throw some avis on my iphone I could take the aTV to wherever I needed to go that day and stream video from iphone to aTV without any prior converting to MP4 (cos that is a true pain in the butt).

Cheers :D

Yep, that is what I'm saying. I have the old VLC app (v1.1.0) and tested it on my iPad before replying. The airplay option is there although I didn't actually try playing it through to my ATV. Should work but iOS VLC app is not being developed anymore so it might be glitchy.

Sweet. I'll look forward to trying it. It might well be glitchy but til they come up with a JB hack to get mirroring on iPhone 4 it'll do nicely.

Thanks

Hey, guys.

Just a quick question...

Quicktime...

I installed the plugin as suggested but am unsure how to airplay on QT. Though I dont ahve the aTV just yet I would've thought that QT could airply an avi etc to my iPhone 4...is this not the case?

Thanks for any help and merry christmas!

No, airplay does not normally stream TO iOS devices other than the ATV. You can use apps like Air Video to stream (avi, mp4, mkv) from your computer to an iOS device.

Once you have a qualified airplay receiver such as an ATV, anything that can play to the ATV will "magically" display an airplay icon that will allow you to set the playback to the ATV. You will also see icons that indicate whether the receiver accepts audio and/or video.

Aha, I see.

THink I was confused cos I remember being able to airplay to iphone form itunes on a previous software. I guess that that has been changed to the "shared" thing on the ios videos app?

It's all good though, I'll rig up QT on the morrow...providing the missus doesn't pull a fast one and get me wooly socks instead of teh aTV unit!

ha ha

Merry Christmas ;)
