After opening VLC its icon pops up in the dock and disappears again. Also after opening it by right clicking on a movie file it opens briefly for 1 second showing it seems a playlist containing only the opened file and then shuts down.

+I have installed the latest Mac OS Monterey version 12.2.
+Installed the latest version of VLC
+Deleted it and reinstalled several times without solving the issue
+Checked safety and privacy if there are any unchecked boxes or so. But don't see any.

I have checked posts by Googling but can't find the solution. Is there anyone who has the same issue or even better knows the solution?

UPDATE: using AppDelete to uninstall VLC did the trick.

Maybe try deleting it with AppCleaner to get rid of bits left behind.

AppCleaner is a good & free app, but doesn’t find the garbage stored in /private/var/
I still use AppDelete (http://www.reggieashworth.com/appdelete.html)

you can check in Console what the error is.
Thanks for your reply. So I have checked console but there is noting under the "errors and problems" section. You also suggested to check if I can open it under an other account. So I have created a test user account and surprisingly the app does open. I haven't been able to check if it plays any videos because there aren't any in the account but it does play online radio stations so it does seem it work perfectly fine for other accounts.

Do you have any idea what the solution might be for the main user account?

Remove the app, reboot, reinstall the app. That should refresh the parts that maybe need refreshing. And hopefully it will work again.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try this directly and come back if this is the solution.

Update: unfortunately it did not work.

Highfive!!! You are the man. It did the trick.

After using this app and reinstalling a pop up showed up asking if I would allow VLC to use my meta data. This did not show up previously. My guess is that at the very first time installing this app I selected the option not granting permission. That somewhere in a preference file this choice was saved and does not get deleted when uninstalling the regular way and it does get deleted using AppDelete.

Anyways many thanks again mate :) You've made me smile for finally finding the solution.

Permission granting has become a serious problem since Catalina:
I run JAVA-14; but -15, -16 and -17 will not get the standard permissions, so I stay with 14 because that release
has the permissions granted for a long time. Must be a problem related to yours.
