My setup is relatively simple: I have an iMac with Apple's Server app doing file sharing (SMB enabled for shares), a hardwired gigabit network, and a 32GB AppleTV with VLC on it.
VLC sees the iMac on the network, and when I enter a valid userID and password it connects... but then just gives an "empty folder" screen. There should at minimum be a bunch of subfolders visible (there are multiple shares on the computer), but I get nothing at all.
Connecting via another Mac on the network works as expected, and the firewall is disabled.
Am I doing something wrong? Is VLC just not compatible with the new(ish) SMB server process in the MacOS?
I also can't get InFuse on the ATV to access the Mac via SMB, but in that case I get an error rather than a connection and no files. InFuse, however, also offers an SFTP option that works properly.
