Some HD videos skip when playing them through vlc on my 2010 mbp. However, when I play the same videos on my 2011 iMac there seems to be no issue. It seems to only happen with movies that have a 30Mb or higher bit rate. Obviously I assume the problem is in processor/graphics, but I've read of other people having similar difficulties with vlc. I tried increasing the file cache but it did not seem to help. Is there anything else I could try or do I simply have to play the 30Mb+ files on my iMac? Thanks.

I don't think VLC for OS X uses any kind of hardware acceleration, so its ability to play back high-bitrate video will depend entirely on your CPU. That's probably the difference between playback on your MBP vs iMac.

You could try Plex instead: the playback engine is in my experience better at high-bitrate playback than VLC and does use hardware acceleration for H.264 at least.

Thanks, I've been using Plex for a few weeks, but I believe it still happened in Plex. I just downloaded xbmc today, and I haven't seen any skipping through it yet.

I like xbmc more than Plex in some ways. The main thing I like about Plex over xbmc is the media manager, it just makes it so simple to edit metadata and everything. I found that Plex seemed to just be sluggish tho whereas xbmc is quick and doesn't seem to be slow or lag around like some of the skins in Plex.
