I use my 2018 $500 MacMini (with lotsa ports) as a media server. I installed a 5TB Samsung internal HDD as soon as AppleCare ran out.

Call me a po-tah-to, but I like to be able to pause VLC when I am distracted by something else.

How can I get my Apple Remote to do this???

Depends on your Apple Remote model as 2018 Mac mini does not have IR receiver. What you got?

If you installed a new disk in the computer, you don’t have a 2018 mini as the 2018 had soldered-on, nonremovable storage. What model do you actually have?

The option is there in the preferences.

Okaaaay! So the wiseguys at Apple cancelled Mini's IR capabiliy in 2014. [Aha! My Mini was made in late 2014: hoe times flies!] Wonder what money scam caused that decision?

In any case, it seems like I'm forced to use Remote Buddy software & a FLIRC USB...just to watch movies!

No wonder all my fiddling since 2019 didn't work out! D'oh!!!

Re the SSD, I had a tech do this. But there was no soldering involved, just a simple plug-in. BTW, it's an awesome upgrade, like buying a MacMansion, finally enough room.

It appears the capability to upgrade storage may have been restored with Apple Silicon. I hope so, though I won't bother for (I hope) for a very long time. I'm not paying for 24K 'souvenirs' for billionaires easily.

Under what Preference in System Preferences do I find the Interface / Playback controls preference?

Thanks, all.

The 2014 mini (which Apple sold until 2018) still includes support for the Apple infrared remote, you don't need any additional hardware. The small black circle on the front next to the power LED is the infrared receiver.

Cool! Howsomever, my power button is on the back right corner and my power light at front right corner with an anonymous black dot to its left. That must be IR!

Might someone please point me to how to get my aluminum Apple Remote operational for my purposes with VLC? Can't seem to find a webpage with this info. TIA!

Post 4 in this thread shows how you use the remote with VLC.

Ah, yes, thanks. But where are these elusive preferences? System Preferences, of course, and then where?
