Anyone out there got a copy of VLC media player in universal binary for me?
My cable supplier here in france supplies it as part of a broadbnd tv interface, but the ppc version won't run under rosetta on my new imac...
They supply compilable source on the site, but I don't know how to compile it. :-(

I checked their forums for you... follow this link

They state:

"A[n] Intel-only variant of VLC will be provided in a few days or not exceeding a few weeks. A so-called universal binary is in preparation as well, but it will take a bit longer until it is finished. It won't be more optimised though, just more universal (obviously...)"

It was posted on 20 Jan 2006.. so any day now... maybe even today!

That or you can compile your own Universal version. I've been tossing up that idea if VLC dies before they make a universal version. It's also another reason I can't switch to the Intel Macs.

Although VLC isn't necessarily a "major app", it's examples like this why I am holding off moving to an Intel Mac for at least another year. Wait until more of the software is optimized, wait for the dust to settle, etc., that's my plan. I'd prefer to avoid little issues like this... Good to see that VLC is addressing it promptly though and releasing a new version in the near future. Who knows how many other handy little apps, the likes of which can be found on versiontracker, etc., will run into the same issues though? Like I said, I'll just be waiting, thanks very much. ;)

It is a major app when you're handling .ogm, .mkv, and .flac files on your Mac. I made sure VLC was on OS X before I switched. Otherwise I'd be stuck on Windows. :(

It's Intel only and not universal. I just saw my first incompatible application.

It's only a beta (and unofficial one at that). Actually, there are many x86-only Mac OS X unofficial beta applications out there, such as Handbrake and Firefox.

I know about those unofficial betas too. I'm just worried that VLC will get shut down and I'll be left with only being able to stream video and view obscure video formats on a PowerPC Mac only.

Absolutely. This is why I bought my 12" 1.33 iBook a month ago, even though I knew full well that new iBooks might be announced at MWSF... in the end they were not. But why deal with a Rev A devil you don't know, when the devil that I do know - current PPC - does everything I need? Actually, even a lot of pro applications will not be available for awhile... Final Cut Pro should come out March, Photoshop either June or October, etc., etc., etc.

Here's the funny thing - by the time some of those major applications are ported, there will DEFINITELY be another revision of Apple's intel products - so why would I get an intel iMac NOW, when I can't run anything pro on it? Actually, I discussed this in a thread where I was asking about FCP5 - which I need to run. As it stands now, if you need FCP NOW, you're pretty much f****d - your options are buying an already obsolete PPC machine, or buying a "new" macintel on which FCP WILL NOT RUN, LOL!

If I were to buy a mactel, I'd want it to run the software I need. By the time the software is available, there will be new Mactels - that's when it makes sense to buy, not the current Mactels.

In fact, the current Mactels are orphans - can't run pro apps, and by the time they will be able to, NEW mactels will arrive - there is NO reason to buy new Mactels NOW. Incidentally, there are reports that the new iMacs ar selling much worse than Apple was hoping. I'm not surprised.

Oh, and I'm totally happy with my cheap $785 brand new 12" 1.33 iBook :)

Meh, I just made a list of all of my applications and if they were PowerPC or Universal. I still have too many PowerPC ones. VLC IS the maker or breaker. I can live with games for a month or two.

Well it was, now I have this Intel one. :D

Well said, I totally understand where you're coming from. I'm not even a Pro user, but I just want to avoid any hassle regardless - that's why I am waiting until 2007 to buy my next Mac. I want a 64-bit system (Merom or Conroe), fully Intel-compatible apps, and an OS, namely 10.5 Leopard, which will (hopefully) take full advantage of it all. Too much to ask for? I hope not...

Oh, and a Blu Ray burner. I want one of those bastards too. And hell, throw in 802.11n support for good measure.

The main reason I'm not upgrading the pro machines we use in the studio is because their is simply too many Apps that wont work with rosetta and it'll take time to update each one to new versions. I wont be updating to a univesal FC in March, because they'll probably release a new FCStudio2 towards the end of the year with the new powermacs... Abobe Creative Suite 3 will probably be the universal app and again probably summer/fall before we see it.

The iMac I've ordered is for general stuff, surfing, iLife apps and microsoft office...

The only app I have concerns about and hope to god works with Rossetta is Corel Painter IX as i'm an artist and use that program every day.. I just like to draw & paint, it chills me out....

I thik I've got you beat :) I'm holding off until their offerings are compelling compared to what I already have. If it's just 20% faster (in real life, not Stevo's imaginary benchmarks :) ), and just 1/4 lb lighter, with just 30 min longer battery life etc.... meh, why bother updating. There's also always the risk that I won't like the new enclosures... I do like the current 12" iBooks, and find the PB not sturdy enough (that soft aluminum that dents when you just look at it - well I like to USE my iBook, throw it into a bag etc.). Many loved the multicolored toilet seats - Apple hasn't done that since... shows you, progress is not always guaranteed. What if they come out with something that's actually worse aesthetically than what we have now?

Also, Intel is moving to the 0.45 process in the middle of 07, that will have 5 times (!!!) less heat dissipation compared to the 0.65. I think I'd rather like those, as you can really have excellent power/heat performance at that point. So, I'll wait until 2008 when the 0.45 works its way down into affordable lappies before I will even consider a buy :)

Yeah, I'd ideally like tro wait for one of these 45nm chips as well - hopefully they'll be available and affordable in 2007...
