VM size & Safari @ 51% CPU usage?

well i'm just surfing the net... doing all the regular sort of stuff. but Safari, and my whole compy in general is kinda going slow. i just opened activity monitor and saw that my VM is about 8GB! isn't that a bit excessive? i mean i've already got 1.5GB RAM...

also, Safari seems to be using alot of the CPU. although i am downloading 10+ things at once. this is the only time it's only slowed down this much though...

but 8GB used on VM??! and look at the pageouts. i thought that if you were getting pageouts you didn't have enough free resources or something?

does anyone find this weird?

Paging

Hmmmm.... two paging problems in the same day, maybe its a bug that wasn't caught. Well, paging happens when you run out of memory, so are these files huge or is another program open that is using a whole lot of RAM. What someone said in another thread was that VM will keep doubling in size to cope with what you are doing, and only restarted will refresh your Mac and it wasn't a good idea to just delete them.

10+ things at once should use some CPU time and space in momory to have them download correctly. I mean, its juggling a bunch of stuff, at at one point, you must have gone over your RAM limit and it making page files now.

I see no signiture, so what Mac do you have? So we can maybe see if there is something up with a certain one.

Hmmmmm.... I have 6.4Gb paging. And I to have 1.5Gb RAM. Something smells fishy.

could it have something to do with the fact safari (used to?) only use up to 4 threads at a time?

so out of 10 you are downloading (which is quite a lot anyway, no?), 4 are active and the rest are being held?

well i've got a 1.25GHz PowerBook, and earlier in the day i did have Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator open. and last night when i was surfing the net i did have quite a bit open in Safari.

and how does Activity Monitor know how much space is used on VM? i've got menumeters and that tells me that i've got 512MB total swap file size in /private/var/vm. that's a fairly big difference.... and also, on my boot (Panther) partition i've only got about 1GB free, so where is the 8GB?

i'm not too familiar with threads... what are they exactly?

i'll have to see if this same slow-down occurs over the next few days. i'll try to only keep it under a 'normal' load as well.
