I currently have XP running under VMWare on Snow Leopard. To upgrade to Win 7, should I perform the installation via bootcamp (over to the XP partition, without SN running), or is running the installation through an OSX VMWare window sufficient? Opinions? Thanks in advance.

What do you plan to use Windows for? Office? Games? ...

The answer depends heavily on what your needs are so please expand on that.

Not gaming, strictly office and running applications that are only available for Windows. I have a unibody 13" macbook (pre 13" macbook pro).

if i install it under bootcamp, will it automatically pick up that partion when i launch fusion? seems like that's what it did with XP. i installed XP under bootcamp, and then installed VMWare via OSX. if i recall correctly, it picked up my XP partition automatically when i installed Fusion. wondering if i should install 7 via bootcamp or through the vmware window (in OSX).

If you are not planning on running games or ever rebooting to Windows for performance reasons, staying with a virtual hard drive under OS X seems fine. It makes life a bit more flexible since you don't have to dedicate space to a Boot Camp partition and can resize the virtual drive more easily.

That said, VMWare will pick up your Boot Camp partition just fine and will configure it almost automatically, so if you decide to go that way there's no real downside apart from the dedicated hard disc space you lose to the Boot Camp partition...
